The Shannon Open was started in 2006 by the family and friends of Shannon Harris, a resident of Saint Paul's Highland neighborhood and a student at the University of Saint Thomas. Shannon was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) when she was 2 years old.
CF is an inherited condition that affects over 30,000 Americans. It impacts the respiratory and digestive system and requires a great deal of medication and treatment in order for those with CF to live normal lives. Great strides have been taken towards a cure and better treatment, but much more work is needed.
Since 2006, the Shannon Open has raised nearly $161,000 in the fight against CF. Proceeds from the tournament go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the University of Minnesota’s CF Center. The CF Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to finding therapies and ultimately a cure for CF, and to improving the lives of those with the disease. The University of Minnesota CF Center was founded in 1961 to develop approaches to understanding and treating the complications of CF. Some of the proceeds from the 2008 Shannon Open were used to sponsor a CF Center seminar for teens living with CF, which Shannon attended.
